Robert "Bob" Earl Smith

Robert Earl “Bob” Smith went to be with the Lord on August 14, 2018. He was born in Duncan, Oklahoma on October 9, 1927, the third child of Floyd Erastus Smith and Cassie Cleveland Smith. He grew up in the oil fields of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Illinois, where his father worked on drilling rigs. On July 20, 1947 in Carmi, Illinois he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Yvonne Land. They shared more than 71 years of marriage during which three sons were born to them: Robert Land Smith, Phillip Scott Smith and Carter Blake Smith. In addition to his sons, Robert leaves behind three lovely daughters-in-law, (Sally, Susan and Rene). He is also survived by five grandchildren, (Sarah, Christie, Cassie, Amanda, and Blake), and was blessed with seven great-grandchildren, (Cooper and Everly, Reid and Austin, Elijah and Robert Earl, and Theodore). Additional joys in his life were his sister, Jeanette Smith Barnett, and her family. He was especially close also to his sister-in-law, Frances Land Whitehead, and other members of the Land Family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Gladys Straughmatt, his brother Floyd Smith, and one great-grandchild Elijah Seelbach. In 1951, Bob graduated from the University of Oklahoma and maintained a love for the school all his life, serving for a few years as President of the Houston OU Club. His first employment after graduation was as an accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Houston, from which he entered the oil and gas industry by joining one of their clients. He later pursued various oil & gas endeavors which eventually led to the founding of Weatherford International. Bob was a founding member of Memorial Bank of Houston, and for several years was a board member for the Allied Bank of Texas. After many years in Houston, he moved in 1990 to his Lake Livingston property in San Jacinto County, where in 1994, he was elected County Judge and served one term. In 2000, Bob and Shirley moved to Bentwater on Lake Conroe where he retired. Bob and Shirley were active in their church throughout their marriage. In their early years in Houston, Bob and Shirley joined St. Paul’s Methodist Church and later became charter members of Memorial Drive Methodist Church, where Bob served as Treasurer and later was Board Chairman. For the past 15 years, they have been members of the North Shore Church in Bentwater. Bob leaves behind a loving circle of family and friends that were touched and blessed with his presence in their lives. He will be missed! Funeral services will be Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:00 AM at North Shore Church, 18501 W. FM 1097, Montgomery, TX 77356.
