Julia Jane Davis Cox

Julia Jane Davis Cox, 88, went to her heavenly home on December 29, 2017. Julia was born on March 15, 1929 in her childhood home located near Smithfield, Texas. She was the youngest child and only daughter of John Henry and Myrtle Eunice Gillis Davis. She grew up in a loving home surrounded by her parents and five bothers, Troy, Howard, Allen, Alfred and Lane Davis. Her grandparents, Calvin Asbury and Millie Jane Gillis lived on a farm adjacent to the Davis Farm and were a tremendous influence on Julia’s younger years. Family ties were very important to Julia. Julia married Kenneth James Cox on June 10, 1952 at the Smithfield Methodist Church. They had two children Linda Jean Cox Boudreaux and David Scott Cox. Kenneth was a geologist and his career required him to move his family to Lafayette, Louisiana and later to Houston, Texas. Julia worked in various schools as a teacher’s aide for special needs children. In 1985 Ken and Julia retired and moved to Huntsville, Texas where they spent their remaining years together growing vegetables and fruits on their own farm, and volunteering in various community organizations. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church of Huntsville, founding members of the HEARTS Museum for Veterans, and active in the Forrest Masonic Lodge, #19 of Huntsville. Julia was especially fond of family history and genealogy. She was a member of the Huntsville Genealogy Society and became a member of the J.B. Gordon Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy. Julia valued deeply her family ties. Although she lived most of her life away from her family she made it priority to remain close to her loved ones through letters, phone calls and those long car trips to Fort Worth or San Marcos to visit her brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Everyone was her “favorite” and she had a special way of making each loved one feel they were indeed her favorite. Julia has now joined those loved ones that went before: her husband, Kenneth, her parents, her five brothers, their wives, and her grandparents. Surviving family includes her daughter, Linda and her husband Chuck Boudreaux, and her son, David and wife Diana Kay Haas Cox. Surviving grandchildren are Travis Boudreaux, Alicia Boudreaux Keenhold, and Juliane Boudreaux. Her step-grandchildren are Paige Henry Miller and Brandon Henry. Julia has six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her many “favorite” nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law. Memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Huntsville on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 10:00AM. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 5 to 8PM at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside services will be contacted at the Smithfield Cemetery.
