Flora McMillian

Flora Gray (Harper) McMillian went home to her Lord and Savior on May 19, 2014 where she has joined her husband of 50 years, Tommy Ray McMillian Sr. Flora is preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Myrtis Harper, and six siblings: Clifford Harper, Louise Harper Lane, R.E. Harper, Mary Harper Allen, Oliver Harper, and Sarah Harper Floyd. Flora is survived by her children, Tommy Ray Jr. and wife Lori of Huntsville, TX, William (Willie) McMillian and wife Carolyn of Conroe, TX, Dorothy Reynolds of Spring, TX, Janice Bloodgood and husband Roger (Buddy) of Oakhurst, TX. The pride and joy of her life, six grandchildren, are: Cindy McMillian Newberry and husband Robert of San Jose, CA, Kristi Bloodgood Wilson and husband Scott of Dallas, TX, Barry Bloodgood of Navasota, TX, Jason Reynolds of Spring, TX, Amanda McMillian and husband Benjamin Holloway of Houston, TX, and Toney McMillian Daniels and husband Jeff of Round Rock, TX. She is also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Carson (deceased), Colton, Lili, Charlotte, Brynn, Maia, Liam, and Emma, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved dearly. Flora was born in Coffeeville, AL and came to Texas in 1938. She and her family lived mostly in Madisonville and Huntsville, TX, where she spent the remainder of her life living it to the fullest by enjoying her family and friends, serving her community and working in her Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School. Her long career consisted of working her way up to Head Dietitian at Huntsville Memorial Hospital and then working for the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) as Chief Dietitian for the state of Texas. During her time at Huntsville Memorial she worked on her Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics. She received her degree from Sam Houston State University in 1975. She retired from Huntsville Memorial after twenty years of service and then accepted the offer of Chief Dietitian for TDC, where she worked for twelve and a half more years. In 2009, she published a memoir about persevering through her life’s early hardships, called “Not Gonna Let Nothing Get Me Down." The family would like to thank her caregivers Rene and James Murray of Huntsville and many others for the care, comfort and support that they provided Flora in her last days with us. Flora gave us all hope, courage and a solid foundation that Jesus Christ is Lord. Her family and countless friends will miss her. Services for Flora will be at 2:00 PM Thursday May 22, 2014 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, Huntsville, Texas with Rev. Glenn Cooksey officiating. Interment will follow at Falba Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas. The family will receive friends and family from 1-2 PM Thursday prior to the service at 2:00 PM. Pallbearers are: Ricky Floyd, John (Bubba) Floyd, Joe Miller, and O.B. Miller all of Huntsville, TX. Andy Allen of Houston, TX, and Eddy Allen of Dallas, TX.
