Zena Bernice Litman

Zena Bernice Duke "Mom-Z" Litman passed away peacefully on January 8, 2016 in Huntsville, Texas at the age of 90. Zena was born on April 10, 1925 in a small farmhouse near Utopia in the Texas Hill Country and was the last surviving sibling of 9 children. After graduation from Utopia High School, she attended nursing school and earned her RN from San Antonio Medical & Surgical Hospital. She then joined the Cadet Nurses Corps, as there was a shortage of nurses during WWII. During this time, she met and married Warren, who would be her husband for 62 years. Following the war, they moved to Moundsville, WV, Warren's home town. Zena became the first nurse to be employed at the Fostoria Glass factory in Moundsville. In 1953, she and Warren moved to Houston where they raised their 2 children. Eventually, Zena would become the head first aid nurse at the famous Astrodome, a position she would hold until her retirement in 1994. Zena enjoyed knitting and was an avid gardener and a member of the Shady Villa Garden Club in Houston. She and Warren loved to travel and visited such places as Russia, India, China, Japan, and numerous European countries as well as Alaska and the Caribbean. In 1991, they moved to Huntsville, a city they grew to love where they became beloved residents by their friends and neighbors. Survivors include son Ken Litman of Burkeville, TX, daughter Kathy Hall of Huntsville, three grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Grandchildren are Chris Litman, Kenna Litman and Josh Waller. Great-grandchildren are Jason Litman, Megan Litman, Kayleigh Litman and Madelyn Litman. Mom-Z, as she was lovingly known to her grandchildren, will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. She loved her family and friends and was a kind and caring person. She was a devout Christian and remained a faithful church attendee for her entire life. Her stories about her life in the Hill Country, her nursing career, and her adventures with Warren will be missed by all who knew her. Services will be held on Thursday, January 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Elkins Lake Baptist Church in Huntsville, Texas. Dr. Ken Hugghins will be officiating. Interment will follow at Brooke Cemetery under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Elkins Lake Baptist Church Building Fund in Zena's memory.
