Halbert Harrison Brinegar

Halbert Harrison Brinegar, 85, of Crockett, Texas passed away September 10, 2014. He was born October 18, 1928 in Moody, Texas to Bert B. and Leora Valentine Hensley Brinegar. He married Bonnie Smith Brinegar and had three children from that marriage. Hal is survived by daughter Patricia Ann Martin and husband Larry, of La Porte, TX; sons Donald Ray Brinegar and wife Jamie of Huntsville, Texas and Jimmie Edwin Brinegar and wife Christine, of Huntsville, Texas; grandchildren: Stephen Michael Martin and wife Windi of La Porte, Susan Ann Wilbanks of La Porte, Donald Matthew Brinegar of Huntsville, Jason Edwin Mathews of North Carolina, Jessica Renee Cates and husband Bryan of New Waverly, Donna Marie Brinegar of Huntsville, Derrick Lee Brinegar, Alex Michael Brinegar, Hailey Marie Brinegar and Timothy Lee Brinegar of Huntsville; 7 great- grandchildren and many half-brothers and half-sisters in the San Antonio area. He is preceded in death by his brothers Jerry, Jay and Roger Brinegar and sisters, Nina Jean Kurtzer and Virginia Cockerham; and grandson, Larry David Martin. Hal joined the US Navy at age 17 & served over 30+ years in the US Navy active and inactive duty on board submarines during the Korean & Cuban Conflict. He loved being on board the submarines and traveled extensively across the world. In 1976, Hal retired from the US Navy and moved his family around the US. Approximately 1970, he moved his family to New Waverly to start building a home. There he owned a subcontracting business building homes on Lake Conroe in the lake subdivisions. Hal then worked for Huntsville ISD as the A/C & Heating Technician in the Maintenance department for 10 years and retired from there. After retirement, Hal was seen out & about loading up tree parts for firewood to be split for his home in Waterwood. Splitting firewood with his automatic log splitter was his passion. In May 2004, Hal was forced to abandon his self-sufficiency and to reside in Houston County Nursing Home. There he was treated like a family member and dearly loved the staff that was always there to help him. The family would like to personally thank Ms. Devorah Goodnight & Dr. Michael Cochran for their many years of caring for Hal. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 19, 2014 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Huntsville, Texas. Military honors will be given following the service by the VFW Post #4709. Final resting place will be at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
