Dane Robert "Robby" Nicolay

Dane Robert Nicolay was born March 10, 1986 in Fort Worth, Texas, to parents Dana Eugene Nicolay and Betty Jean Harless Nicolay. In his life, laughter was among Robby’s highest values. On March 26, 2024 Robby went to make God laugh, and to bring a smile to those who have gone before. At eighteen months, Robby and his parents moved to Huntsville, TX, where he remained a town regular for the majority of his life. Robby was an exceptionally energetic person, and filled his life with more than its share of activity. His greatest passion was for the arts, and he worked in an expansive range of genres and media. Beginning with piano in early childhood, he went on to participate in several musical collaborations—most notably the band Master Blaster—and pursued numerous solo ventures. At various times he recorded and performed on keyboard, guitar, bass, and vocals, and also experimented with music production. Robby inherited a passion for the theater arts from his parents, and was naturally inclined to comedy writing and performance. His passion for drawing and cartoon was irrepressible, and he worked in other visual media including stop-action claymation and film. To support himself Robby worked in food service, and was a self-described “foodie.” In all these areas, Robby was a connoisseur and critic with wide-ranging experience and tastes. Robby also made a hobby out of conversation. He was especially fond of arguing the contrary side of an issue and pursuing a debate to the brink of absurdity. In spite of his penchant for arguing both sides of a point, he held deep convictions on numerous moral and political issues; most notably the value of free expression to democratic society and to human existence. His passion for all of these endeavors was part in parcel of his lifelong spiritual quest. Robby was an exceptionally kind, sensitive, and gregarious person. He was a loving son, grandson, nephew, cousin, brother, and friend. He touched the lives of all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his parents Dana and Betty Nicolay and his brother Ian, as well as his red heeler, Eddie. A visitation will take place from 5 PM to 7 PM on Friday, April 5th at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home (1700 Normal Park Drive). A celebration of Robby’s life will begin at 11 AM on Saturday, April 6th at First Christian Church of Huntsville (1800 Avenue R). Interment will follow a reception at the church, at 2:00pm at Mayes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial condolences to the family may be made at www.shmfh.com.
