Loved ones of Charles "Charlie" Powell, Jr. grieve his passing on January 25, 2022, at the age of 92. Charlie will be forever remembered for his devotion to God, to his family, and to those in need. Charlie was born in Montgomery, Texas to Charlie Powell, Sr. and Bessie Walker Powell, on June 24, 1929. Charlie is survived by his Huntsville high school sweetheart, wife of 73 1/2 years Flora Doughtie Powell; son, Rex Powell, wife Cynthia; daughter Rhonda Stroud, husband Brad. Additionally, he was affectionately known as Gramps to grandchildren, Kimberly Powell, Brandan Powell, Marcus Whitmore, wife Valerie and Jeffrey Whitmore, as well as great grandchildren, Madison Powell and Charlie Whitmore. Charlie received military honors to begin his graveside service as he served our country in the United States National Guard. Servant describes the life of Charlie, his heart for service began at a very young age and continued to his last days. Charlie, a selfless servant for Jesus Christ, served as loving pastor in several Texas churches and throughout his life, Charlie ministered to others through mission trips in Texas, Mexico and Guatemala. In 1983, Charlie founded the Good Shepherd Mission, Huntsville, Texas, a mission he began out of the trunk of his car, the mission was set up to give to those in need, a place for shelter, food, clothing, and biblical counseling. In the beginning, Charlie would prepare hot meals for those in need, using a two-burner camping stove. As a result of Charlie's vision and work, and with the support of the community and area churches, the Good Shepherd Mission today serves two hot meals daily for the community, provides clothing, groceries, a thrift store, counseling and a 66 bed shelter. For many years, Charlie and his family would provide Christmas dinner and gifts to the residents of Breckenridge Village of Tyler, a residential community to adults with disabilities through Charlie's nonprofit, He Cares for All. After retiring, Charlie became a volunteer chaplain at UT hospital, Tyler Texas for the TB floor. Since the patients would be hospitalized for months and missed home cooked meals, Charlie, a great cook and his wife, Flora would prepare home cooked meals together for Charlie to take to the patients. Charlie, unconditionally, gave to so many throughout his life. By love, serve one another, this was the heart of Charlie's acts of service, for he loved all of humanity and served all of humanity. We will grieve our loss here on earth, and we will cherish our memories but we will also rejoice, for we will see our loved one once again because our faith is in Jesus who lives.
