Astrid Karen McDaniel Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Karen went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 11, 2022. She was born on March 24, 1951 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She grew up in New Orleans, San Antonio, Texas and Lafayette, Louisiana. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1969 and started college there at University of Southwest Louisiana. After a year of college, she transferred to University of New Orleans to complete her bachelor's degree in math education. During that time, she met her future husband, Danny. They were married on November 24, 1973, a month before he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. They traveled the states and to many foreign countries during their forty-eight years of marriage. Karen was a professional teacher and began her career at Grace King High School in Metairie, Louisiana. As she moved around with Danny's career, Karen adapted and worked at many jobs. She was a teacher, bank teller, aerobics instructor, managed a base bowling alley, and a purchasing agent in the federal civil service. After Danny retired, Karen returned to her passion of teaching. She taught math at Huntsville Intermediate School, pre-school at First United Methodist Church, advanced math courses at Huntsville High School, and advanced math courses at Trinity High School. She was a wonderful math teacher and loved to see the light go on when a student finally learned math. Karen and Danny always found a church family whenever they moved to a new assignment. Some of the churches were on base and some in a nearby community. She was a strong believer and proud Christian. She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 2002 when she moved to Huntsville, Texas. She served the church on various committees and proudly sang in the chancel choir with her daughter, Jamie. Her daughter and son were what made her smile. After fifteen years of marriage, Jamie was born and then four years later Austin joined the family. Karen was a stay-at-home mom during their early years and loved reading to them and helping them develop into the wonderful adults they are today. Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Lee Mowe II and Astrid Vigne Mowe. She is survived by her husband Danny J. McDaniel, daughter Jamie L. McDaniel, son Austin L. McDaniel, brother E. Lee Mowe III and his wife Bonnie, sister Adrienne Mowe, brother Christian Mowe and his wife Dana. Karen will have a private graveside service at the Houston National Cemetery for family only.
