Vera Welsh

Vera Eleanor Welsh, 91, of Montgomery, passed away on September 3, 2012 after a brief illness. Vera was born on December 27, 1920 to Joseph and Pearlie Mae McLaurin in Fayetteville, NC. Vera is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John F. Welsh, Sr., daughter Carol Craddock, and sons, Joseph (Kevin) Welsh, and Gregory Welsh. Vera is survived by sons, John F. Welsh, Jr. and wife, Sherri, of Montgomery, TX, Christopher Welsh, of Gulf Breeze, FL and Michael Clements of Garland, TX; grandchildren: Caleb Welsh, Joshua Welsh, Jennetta Welsh, and Christopher Welsh, of Montgomery, TX, and Melanie Bishop of York, PA; great-grandchildren: Brett Bishop and Hayden Bishop of York, PA. A third, but yet to be named great-grandchild, is due in December 2012. She also leaves behind many extended family members in Oklahoma and South Carolina who warmly embraced her. Vera was born and raised in Fayetteville, NC. She worked for many years as a switchboard operator at the Fort Bragg Main Post Telephone Exchange where she ultimately became Switchboard Supervisor. It is here that she met the love of her life, John, and retired to raise their children. Vera was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fayetteville where she was an active member in the choir, and the Women’s Sodality. In September 2006, after a brief illness, Vera moved to Montgomery with John, Sherri, and their family. She brought with her the passion for life, cooking and music, as well as, her love of pulled-pork barbecue. The tradition for its’ preparation has now been passed to future generations. She became a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Plantersville where she joined the choir, and was warmly embraced by all of the parishioners. Lady “V”, as she became known to her East Coast extended family, will be missed by all of us. Visitation will be Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plantersville. A funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plantersville, TX will be celebrated by Reverend William T. Kelly on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will immediately follow in the church cemetery. The family wishes to thank all those who provided comfort and support to Vera and the family during her final days. The family extends special thanks to Liz Torres, who was with Vera many days during the past few months, and the nurses, doctors, and staff of Odyssey Hospice in Conroe, TX, who assisted Vera with departure from this life with dignity and respect.
