Velma Bertha Powell

Velma Bertha Powell, 87, went home to her Father’s house in heaven on September 15, 2024. Velma was surrounded by her family, her pastor and his wife at her home in Montgomery, Texas. Velma was born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 25, 1937, to Bertha and Soloman Shankman. She studied at Southwestern University (now Rhodes College) and while attending one summer session at Memphis State University, she met the love of her life Jame G. Powell (“Pete”). She graduated from Memphis State University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. James and Velma were married 56 years when James passed away. Velma was very artistic. She played the piano by ear which was a gift from God. Everyone who came to visit was blessed by her playing the piano. She also played the accordion. Velma loved to paint and gifted many with her artwork. Velma later returned to college to obtain her teaching certificate. She taught fourth grade in the Conroe ISD for nineteen years. Velma was an active member of Living Savior Lutheran Church in Montgomery, Texas. She served on the Bereavement Committee where she cooked many meals. She was also on the Worship Committee, Lutheran Women’s Mission League and attended many bible studies. One of Velma’s joys in life was spending time with her family. Velma leaves behind two sons, James Gilbert Powell Jr. and his wife Christine, Steven Bart Powell and his wife Lucia, a daughter Deborah Powell Houghtaling and her husband Gregory. Velma leaves behind nine grandchildren, Christine and her husband Matt, Jimmy, Brandon, Stephanie, Ashley and her husband Weston, Lexie, Paige and her husband Joe, Jennifer and her husband Steven and Bart. Velma leaves behind five great grandchildren, Mia, Olivia, Ava, Levi and Clark. Velma leaves behind one brother, Bill Shankman and his wife Donna. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 20, 2024, at 11:00 by Pastor David R. Bailes at Living Savior Lutheran Church, 309 Pond Street, Montgomery, Texas 77356. A private burial for the family will be held at Garden Park Cemetery in Conroe, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Living Savior Lutheran Church- “Love Fund”.
