Mary Teresa Smith Johnston stepped into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Next to Jesus, the love of her life was her husband of 69 years, James R. Johnston. “The minute I laid eyes on him, I told my roommate that I was going to marry that man,” and that she did! They enjoyed life together serving their Lord by singing in the choir, sharing their faith in Christ, and serving their community. Teresa enjoyed God’s creation through flower gardening, watching the hummingbirds and traveling the world with J. R. They were the epitome of true love from the moment they met at Mississippi College. Teresa was born on February 2, 1927 to Alfred Leon Smith, Sr. and Zelma McKenzie Smith on the family farm in Oma, (Lawrence County) Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her three younger siblings, Ella Virginia Smith Goble, Alfred Leon Smith, Jr, and Clovis Benson Smith. Teresa is survived by her husband, James R. (J.R.) Johnston of Huntsville, TX, sister-in-laws Jo Ann Smith of Littleton, NC, and Loraine Padelford of Pearl, MS, niece Jo Smith Read of Bracey, VA, nephews Keith Wayne Barfield of Katy, TX, Marc Padelford of Pearl, MS, and Walton Padelford of Jackson, TN, and numerous friends. The service to celebrate Teresa’s life is Friday, May 6 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Bugh officiating. Visitation is 2:00pm and the funeral is at 3:00pm. Interment will follow at Brooke Cemetery in Huntsville, TX. Pallbearers are Bill Hyman, Clyde Loll, Thomas Leeper, Eric Thomas, David Ward, and Wayne Barrett. Honorary pallbearers are Norman Ward, Carol Williams, Dr. Jack Staggs, Bobby Cooper, Grady Easley and Jack Heintschel.
