Dr. Sara Ann Hart

On the evening of November 11, 2016, Dr. Sara Ann Hart passed away at Huntsville Memorial Hospital at the age of 74. Dr. Hart was born in Greenville, Texas, April 20, 1942 to Arval and Tommie Ragland Smart. Dr. Hart was a graduate of the University of Houston, East Texas State University and Lone Oak High School. In 1964, she began her career in education at Lee College in Baytown. The following year, she continued her career in education at Sam Houston State University which extended over 40 years. She traveled the globe – presenting her research and participating in workshops – to places as far away as Greece, Spain, Mexico, and Hawaii. Her generosity of spirit extended into the campus community by organizing and implementing many official campus events, and ceremonies celebrated by the University. Dr. Hart made many contributions to her profession, her university, her college and her community; she touched the lives of thousands of colleagues and students, friends and neighbors. In 1994, she received the highest honor The Sam Houston University can bestow upon a faculty member – its Excellence in Service Award. Upon her retirement, in 2005, she was awarded Professor of Emeritus. Dr. Hart was one of a kind, she opened her heart and home to many throughout the years. Her family was the light of her life. She enjoyed holiday with family and spending time with friends. Sara was always encouraging, upbeat and ready with a helping hand regardless of her own personal struggles. She was full of life and a delight to be around even as her health declined. Our world will not be nearly as colorful without her in it! Sara was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Chris, and her husband, Jerry Hart. She is survived by her sister, Su Morris, her nephew Todd Morris and wife Candy, her great nephew Tim Morris, and her companion & friend, Billy Horne. She leaves a multitude of friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Sam Houston Funeral Home Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at 1:00 pm, followed by the memorial service at 2:00 pm, at the First Christian Church in Huntsville, Texas.
