Robert "Bobby" Powers

Robert “Bobby” Powers, 74, of New Waverly went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at his home. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, January 13. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 14, at Sam Houston Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas at 10:00 A.M. Pastor Roland Oliphant and friend Jimmy Hammons will officiate and a burial service will follow at Hill Cemetery in New Waverly. Bobby dedicated his life to the Lord and is now in his loving arms. Bobby was born October 28, 1946, in Houston, Texas, to Robert Powers and Hattie Wojcik. He graduated from New Waverly High School in 1964. Bobby loved old, loud and fast cars and he loved people so it was only fitting that his chosen profession mixed the best of both worlds. In 1972, he purchased a storefront in his hometown and Powers Auto Supply was born. He operated the store for almost 50 years where he could always be found at the counter ready to help anyone who needed it. Bobby served as Assistant Chief and later became Fire Chief of the New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department. He had many stories of him and Constable Avon Bartee going on calls with just the two of them. Some scary and some funny. Bobby was a big supporter of many veteran organizations like Wounded Warriors and Folds of Honor. In addition, he was a lifelong supporter for almost all types of New Waverly fund raisers. Our lives are better for knowing him and he will forever be missed. His wife Renee has lost her soulmate but will see him again. He is survived by his brother Lawrence Wojcik and wife Mary, by his children Austin, Heather, Jessica Gathright and husband Paul, Charlotte Ratliff and husband TJ, and Scott. He was known as Poppy to his grandchildren Brendan Gathright, Julia Muehlstein, Stella and Olivia Ratliff. Many other friends and family loved and will miss Bobby. He is preceded in death by his mother Hattie, father Robert Powers, and stepfather Walter Wojcik. Due to COVID-19 we ask that everyone in attendance please wear a mask. For those who do not feel comfortable in attending, please know that Bobby would have wanted you to put you and your family’s health above anything else.
