Robert Heffernan

Robert Lee Heffernan Loving husband, father, and grandfather Robert Lee Heffernan (Bob) was born Oct. 30, 1931 and went to be with his Lord on January 31, 2006 at the age of 74 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee to John Lory Heffernan and Lillian Dillaha Heffernan. Bob grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he graduated from Catholic High in 1948. After graduation, he attended The University of New Mexico before being greeted by Uncle Sam and served in the U.S. Army for two years in Germany during the Korean conflict. Upon his honorable discharge as a Corporal, Bob worked for Houston Natural Gas, where he met his wife, Mary Ruth Fincher. They were married 50 years ago on Dec. 30, 1955. Together they raised three children. Bob attended the University of Houston and graduated with a BA degree in Marketing. In 1955, he began his career with Gulf Oil Corp. in marketing. His career continued with Chevron Oil Corp. when the company bought Gulf Oil. He retired from Chevron in Houston after 36 years of service, and settled in Elkins Lake in Huntsville. Here he enjoyed golfing with his friends, serving in his church, singing in the choir, and spending every opportunity with his grandchildren. He also served as a chaplain at Huntsville Memorial Hospital, was involved in the prison ministry, volunteered at the Good Shepherd Mission and Hospitality House, and served for several years as Chairman of the Board of Crime Stoppers, where he was also known as Captain CatchÂ’em. BobÂ’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. This man of great humor and love is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Fincher Heffernan of Huntsville; daughter, Laura Kay Heffernan of Sacramento; son, Robert Guinn Heffernan and wife Jeannie of Houston; daughter, Karyn Lee Heffernan Johnson of Huntsville; grandsons, Cole and Evan Heffernan of Houston, and Alexander Johnson of Huntsville; granddaughters Emily and Ashley Heffernan of Sacramento, CA; brother, Thomas Heffernan of Rockport, TX; brother, Steve Heffernan of N. Little Rock, AR; sister, Patricia Kelly of Memphis, TN; numerous cousins, nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends. Pallbearers include brother-in-law Steve Fincher; nephews Frank Middleton, Lee Middleton, Rob McCoy, Shorty Fincher, Kevin Heffernan and Tom Kelly; great-nephew Greg Middleton; and nephew Robert Fincher will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Services will be held at Elkins Lake Baptist Church at 11:00 am Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, Dr. Ken Hugghins officiating, under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Brooke Cemetery. Visitation will be held Feb. 7, 2006 from 10:00-11:00 am at Elkins Lake Baptist Church.
