Reba Pegoda Sylvester

Reba Pegoda Sylvester, age 99, passed away while surrounded by family on November 22, 2024, at Huntsville Memorial Hospital in Huntsville, Texas. She was born September 29, 1925, in Huntsville, Texas to John W. Pegoda Sr. and Viola L. Thigpen Pegoda. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Allen Whitfield Sylvester, son, Allen Sylvester Sr., sister, Ernie and her husband, James Herbst, and her brother, John and wife, Ruth Pegoda, sister, Opal (Honey) Pegoda, her brothers-in-law Jim Cummings and Jack Skidmore, son-in-law, Paul (Mitch) Mitchell, and her Great Grand Son, Brennen Rushing. Reba is survived by her daughter Susan Sylvester Mitchell, daughter-in-law, Noma Sylvester, grandson, Allen Jr. and wife Janie Sylvester, granddaughter Kristi and husband Tim Rushing, granddaughter Karen and husband, Mike Mericle. Her Great Grandchildren are: Serah Sylvester, Jordan McDaniel, Alexandria Sylvester and (partner) Anthony Alvarez, Chance Rushing and (partner) Elizabeth Maldonado, Duncan and wife, Gabby Mericle, Andrew Sylvester, and Luke Mericle and her Great-great Grandchild Chance Rushing Jr. She also was survived by her brother, Charles (Pete) and wife Peggy Pegoda, and her sisters: Mary Ann Cummings, Sue Skidmore, and Catherine and husband, Hershel Sanders. She was also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews. Reba graduated from Huntsville High School and was believed to be the last surviving member of the class of 1942. She has remained a Loyal lifetime Hornet member. She married her childhood sweetheart, the love of her life, Allen Sylvester on November 3, 1945, at Calvary Baptist Church. Allen was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force that allowed them to live in many different places. Reba, a devoted housewife, enjoyed bowling for many years, gardening, working in her yard but most importantly she cherished talking and spending time with her family and loved ones. Many do not know that she wrote poetry and has had a poem published in New Voices in American Poetry—1980. Visitation will be held Monday, November 25th, from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. A private burial service will be at Pine Prairie Cemetery, Huntsville, Texas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
