Pat Bruce

On December 19, 2019, at just past 1:30 p.m., Pat Bruce, beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother and friend to many, was called to his heavenly home. Pat Bruce was born in Huntsville, Texas, on November 4, 1938. Pat was one of seven children, including being one of two sets of twins in the family: Pat and his brother Mike and Pat’s brother, Virgil (Blue) and sister, Virgie. Pat graduated from Huntsville High School in 1957, and, excepting two years of service in the United States Army from 1961 – 1963 and one year working on oil tanks, worked continuously with the Texas Department of Transportation for 41 years prior to his retirement in 2001. Pat worked as a technical engineer with the department, handling everything from surveying to supervising the construction of roads and bridges. Pat married Marjie Ready (Bruce) on February 15, 1964, and son, Steve Marlon Bruce, was born January 2, 1965. Pat always intensely involved in Steve’s various sporting activities, including coaching many of the youth league teams in which Steve was involved. In later years, Pat continued to be involved as he and Marjie rarely missed any of Steve’s games as a high school football coach, or any sporting activities in which their grandchildren were involved. In good weather and bad, whether winning or losing, Steve and later the grandchildren could always count on “mamaw” and “papaw” to brave the weather and even physical challenges to cheer them on from the stands. The grandchildren will also carry a lifetime of wonderful memories Pat created with his always ready wit and willingness to accompany them on adventures of mischief and fun, enjoying these moments as much as the children. Pat Bruce is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjie Bruce, son, Steve Bruce and wife, Lisa Bruce, of Spring, Texas, grandchildren, Steven Bruce and wife, Ashley Bruce, of Tomball, Texas, Jacob Bruce, and Kathryn Bruce, of Spring, Texas, brothers, Mike Bruce and wife, JoAnne Bruce, brother Virgil (Blue) Bruce, sister Virgie Bruce, sister-in-law, Velma Bruce, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pat is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Anna Belle Bruce, and brothers Henry Bruce, Jr. (Junior), James Bruce and Ray Bruce. Pat’s life was a testament to the power of deep faith, unwavering commitment and uncommon courage no matter the circumstance. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His family and friends will miss him greatly, but hope to honor his memory by carrying on his wonderful legacy. Pat Bruce will be remembered at a Visitation to be observed on Thursday, December 26, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home at 1700 Normal Park Drive, Huntsville, Texas 77340, and a Memorial Service to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2019.
