Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Ruffer

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Ruffer, 84, of The Woodlands, Texas, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 8227 County Road 205, Plantersville, Texas on Tuesday, July 25th at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Betty was born on May 4, 1933 in Newark, N.J. to Michael J. Breslin and Kathleen Carey Breslin. She is survived by her brother Michael J. Breslin and sister, Kathleen Breslin. She was raised in Rutherford, N.J. and graduated from Jersey City Medical Center School of Nursing with an RN. Betty and Frank A. Ruffer were married on October 5, 1957 and spent 49 years together until Frank’s death on June 18, 2007. Betty is survived by her sons, Thomas and wife Carol, Francis and wife Mary Lynne, and daughter, Carey. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Ruffer, Kathleen Ruffer, Patrick Ruffer, Mitchell Ruffer and John Ruffer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Betty and Frank moved to Conroe, Texas for Frank’s career in 1972 and lived in River Plantation and later retired to Walden on Lake Conroe. In addition to raising her family, Betty worked for many years as an RN at Conroe area hospitals. She and Frank enjoyed traveling the world in their retirement as well as playing golf with many friends in Walden. As a Walden resident, she was an active member of the Walden Ladies Golf Association, past president of the Walden Ladies Association and an avid bridge player. Betty was a treasured member of both Margaret Montgomery Daughters of the American Revolution and Robert Woodson Colonial Dames 17th Century. In Colonial Dames, she set up a program which helps the chapter give scholarships to Lone Star College students. She also enjoyed volunteering her time at the Montgomery County Assistance League and the Montgomery County Library. She was deeply loved and will always be remembered. The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Susan Backlas and the team at Caring Senior Services for helping care for our mother in the last few years of her life.
