Mary Ann Birkhead

Mary Ann Birkhead, 87, passed away on May 25, 2017. Mary Ann was born on July 26, 1929, in Snook, Texas, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Minnie (Vajdak) Kovar of Beasley, Texas. Her husband William “Roy” Birkhead, sister Alice Mae Lively and brother-in-law Everett Doyle Lively and Margaret Ruth (Margie) Kovar preceded her in death. Survivors include daughter, Sherri Cowan and husband, Trey of Spring, Texas; son, Bobby Birkhead and wife, Janice of Friendswood, Texas; daughter, Susan Morrow and husband, Bob of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Clara Crumbly and husband, Kenneth of Williamsburg, Virginia. Mary Ann was a member of the Rosenberg Brethren Church until she moved to Houston, Texas in 1946 after graduating from Beasley High School and was a member of the Houston Brethren Church until her marriage to Roy Birkead when she joined First Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas. Mary Ann graduated from Southwestern Business University in 1947 and was employed doing stenographic and secretarial work in the Houston area. She was working at the Humble Oil & Refining Company at the time she met her husband, Roy, a widower with two children, Susan and Bobby. Mary Ann had a proposal not only from Roy but also from Susan and Bobby. Roy and Mary Ann married in 1965 and their daughter Sherri was born two years later. Mary Ann worked for Pasadena Independent School District, as a school secretary and in the Substitute Teachers program. She and Roy retired in 1987 and enjoyed traveling and playing golf with many wonderful people in Elkins Lake. After Roy’s death Mary Ann moved back to Houston to be closer to her children. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 1229 Avenue J, Huntsville, Texas 77340. The family will receive relatives and friends at 10:00 AM, with funeral services to follow at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in the chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Full obituary may be viewed and memorial condolences made to the family at www.shmfh.com.
