Mary Jane Addison

Mary Jane Pond Addison, widow of Dr. Eugene Morse Addison, MD, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2006, in Silverado Senior Living – The Woodlands, at the age of 82. She was born June 10, 1924, in Orange, Texas, the only child of the late Henry Davis and Corinne Carter Pond. She graduated from Reagan High School in Houston, Texas, and graduated a registered nurse from Jeff Davis Hospital School of Nursing, in Houston, Texas. It was in nursing training she met Eugene Addison, who was an intern. They married in the First Baptist Church, Huntsville, Texas, on March 10, 1946. Dr. Addison was in the Army Medical Corps, and Mary Jane followed him, serving as his surgical nurse. In 1948, they settled in Huntsville, where the late Dr. Addison began his long and distinguished medical practice. Mary Jane found her place in the community serving in many capacities. She was active in Cub and Boy Scouts, serving as den mother. She received the Den Mothers Award in 1961. She served at President of the local PTA and district board. She was named a state life member of PTA in 1967. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught a Sunday School Class, was a member and soloist of the choir, and served as advisor to the Girl’s Auxiliary of the Women’s Missionary Society. She was a member of the Garden Club, serving as President in 1956, a member and sponsor of the Community Choir and appeared in many of their productions. She was a member of the Woman’s Forum, Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs, serving as President in 1980, and named woman of the year in 1974. She was past President of the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, of which she was a charter member and held a life membership. Mary Jane served as chair of the Heritage Committee, Mayor’s Bicentennial Commission, 1974-1976. She was chair of the City Beautification Commission, and Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration, 1982. She served on the committee for Mrs. Sam Houston’s Birthday Party, and appeared each year in her beautiful red anti-bellum dress. Mary Jane had a great love for history and her ancestors. She served on the Texas Historical Foundation and the State Heritage Commission. She was a member of the Walker County Historical Commission, Walker County Genealogical Society, Colonial Dames of America, Dames of Court of Honor, and the Quaker Society. She served as Regent of the Mary Martin Elmore Scott Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Captain John Utie Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists. She served as State Corresponding Secretary of this organization 1977-1979, and State Recording Secretary 1983-1985, and State Regent 1989-1991. She was President of the J. B. Gordon #339 Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy and held many state offices and chairmanships. She was organizing President of the Robert Lawrence Chapter, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. This chapter was named for her colonial ancestor. She was most proud of her Texas ancestors. She was President of the President Houston Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and in1973, served the State as Recording Secretary General, 1975 as First Vice President General and was President General of the Texas Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1977. She was on the following state committees, many as chair: Alamo Committee, Library Committee, Printing Committee, Clara Driscoll Fellowship Award, Nominating Committee, Legislative Committee, and DRT Manual of Procedure Committee. Her true love was the preservation of the Alamo. Mary Jane is survived by her two sons; Eugene Morse Addison II, and wife Anne, of Huntsville, Texas, and Dr. Paul Davis Addison, and wife Glenda, of Edmond, Oklahoma; and three grand children: Eugene Morse Addison III, of Houston, Texas; Clifford Paul Addison, of Edmond, Oklahoma; and, Sarah Larue Addison of Austin, Texas Visitation will be at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 Normal Park, Huntsville, Texas, Friday Evening, October 27, 2006, from 7:00 to 8:00 P. M. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Huntsville, Texas, on Saturday, October 28, 2006, at 10:00 A. M., with the Rev. Carrol Williams and Rev. David Valentine officiating. Burial will follow in Adickes Addition, Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
