Margarete Phillips

Margarete A. Phillips Margarete A. Phillips died on December 7, 2005. She was born, reared, educated and lived in various parts of Germany until she married Clinton D. Phillips, a professional Infantryman. They met in Oberammergau, Germany, where Margarete managed the camera department in the military Post Exchange (PX). She held other retail sales jobs in Garmisch and in Luneburg, Germany. In 1959 they married in Baumholder, Germany. In September 1962 she first arrived in the United States. With Clinton’s base station as Fort Hood, they settled in Copperas Cove, TX from where he retired. This prompted their move to Huntsville in 1977. After marriage, Margarete devoted her considerable talents and energies to raising three children. Managing the household was especially challenging given that Clinton was frequently absent for lengthy periods due to the Cuban Missile Crises, two tours to Vietnam, and assorted extended field training exercises. She bought houses, executed contracts, and moved the family in Clinton’s absence without benefit of formal English language instruction to help her. Her children attribute most of their respective achievements and successes to Margarete’s encouragement, her discipline, energy, and her unconditional love towards them all. Survivors include her sister Christl Hangl of Germany; daughter Susan Gledhill and spouse Tom Gledhill; son Tom Phillips and spouse Ann Phillips; son Christian Phillips and spouse Nancy Phillips; grandchildren Kelsey and Logan Gledhill, Taylor and Emily Phillips; Jason Phillips and spouse Stacey Phillips, Shawnessy Larson and spouse Eric Larson and David Phillips; great grandchildren Zachary and Nathan Larson. She ran a good long and productive race. May God Bless her and accept her into his loving arms for eternity! Services will be held Monday December 12, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church with interment to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Houston National Cemetery under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
