Margaret W. Thompson

Margaret W. Thompson, age 98, formerly of the Woodlands spent the last three years of her life residing at Creekside Retirement Center in Huntsville, Texas. She passed away peacefully on the 5th of August 2023, and is now tending to God’s gardens in Heaven. She was born in 1925 in a small town in South Texas. In her youth she enjoyed small town living in towns like Austwell and Devers Texas. Her fond memories include rafting, fishing, and playing in the Austwell bay with her brothers Jerry and Jim. In the summer she loved to swing in the hammock and read her favorite books. Margaret grew up learning cooking and sewing skills from her mother. Her family recipes are cherished by her family. They especially enjoyed her holiday dishes like her Thanksgiving feasts. Upon high school graduation, Margaret followed her father’s educational journey when she enrolled in Sam Houston Teachers College. Her fond memories of dormitory life, professors, classmates, and Huntsville life were shared with her family. She enjoyed reminiscing about walking downtown to Kings Candies and seeing movies at the Theater. She was a member of the Philo Sorority and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. She loved to take rides around the campus each time she visited her son Robert who became a third-generation alumnus with the same degree. Margaret entered the work force in Houston after graduation. She met and married Russell Thompson where they settled in Meyerland and raised their family, Cindy and Robert. They later relocated to the Woodlands. Russell and Margaret were avid gardeners. Their yards were always known as showpieces of the neighborhood. In addition to gardening, they were world travelers. When their grandson Kyle was born, their focus turned to travel to attend his sporting events. Life came full circle when Kyle traveled the world, and she lived her life through his travels. When challenges brought her back to Huntsville, she became a resident of Creekside Retirement Community. She enjoyed her time there with family visits, activities, and receiving thoughtful caregiving. Returning to Huntsville allowed her the opportunity to reminisce about her time as a student at Sam Houston Teachers College. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell Thompson. Margaret is survived by her daughter Cindy Harrington, son-In-law Rick Harrington, son Robert Thompson, daughter-In-law Chris Thompson, and her beloved grandson, Kyle Thompson. Her family is sincerely grateful to her dear friend Joan O’Connor, Dr. Karin Olsen-Williams, Pat Oliphant, the amazing staff members at Creekside Retirement Community, and expresses a very special thanks to her caregiver Mary Ann Rohrbach. Each and every one of them are guardian angels who Margaret appreciated and loved. A visitation will be held on Wednesday August 16, 2023 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville beginning at 10:00am and a funeral service following at 11:00am.
