Madene LaVerne Reeves

Madene LaVerne Reeves was born on August 4, 1920 in Weldon, Texas, the oldest of seven children, to H. C. (Clyde) Reeves and Gracie Knighten Reeves. She departed this life and went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 8, 2014. Miss Reeves graduated from Sugarland High School in 1939 and Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1942, the graduation ceremony being held outdoors at the old Greek Theatre. She started her teaching career immediately following graduation, her first school being in the Center Community near Weldon. She went on to teach in various school districts, ending her career at Humble ISD in 1979 after 37 years of enriching the lives of hundreds of children. After retirement, Madene continued giving of herself to others by opening the doors of her home and heart to family and friends, and even providing a home to some when they needed it most. She enjoyed cooking, spending time working in her yard and regularly attending Sunday school and church services at Northside Baptist until her health began to fail. Madene’s family enjoyed hearing her stories about the “old days” in Weldon. One particular favorite was the story about the day that Bonnie and Clyde broke their buddies out of the Eastham Prison Farm and flew by in their getaway car while the Reeves kids were out waiting for the school bus. At that time, they didn’t realize they were witnessing history in the making. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Horace Reeves, Morris Reeves, Jack Reeves and Thomas Ray Reeves; sister, Modene Reeves Stephenson; Sisters-in-law, Mary Reeves Brake and Opal Reeves; Brothers-in-law, Jim Brooks Smith and Lyndon Stephenson; Nephew, Gary Stephenson; Niece, Carolyn Stephenson Lundy. She is survived by her sister, Nellie Reeves Smith; Sisters-in-law, Amelia Aguilar Reeves and Evelyn Reeves; Nephews, Marshall Reeves, David Reeves, Mike Reeves, Jack Reeves, Jr., Kevin Stephenson, Ricky Smith, Mark Reeves, and Galen Reeves; Nieces, Mary Ann Reeves Faulkner, Vicki Smith Townley, Suzanne Reeves Strickland, Lisa Reeves Elliott, Jan Rae Reeves Carpenter, and Vicki Lynn Reeves Tardy, and Zelda Stephenson Jahns. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Rena and James Murray for the care they provided to Madene in their home care facility during her final days. Services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 2 pm at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Homes with Reagan Cooksey officiating. Visitation with family and friends will be from 1 pm until services begin. Burial will follow at the Adickes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery.
