LUCY ALICE BRUCE STEWART Lucy Alice Bruce Stewart was born April 30, 1913, in Walker County, Texas, the oldest child of Joseph Parker Bruce and Dora Etta Taylor Bruce. She passed away Thursday, January 26, 2006, in Houston. Lucy Alice graduated from Huntsville High School and attended Sam Houston State Teachers College. She majored in home economics. While in college she met James Rush Stewart. They married in 1934. To this union was born a son, James Rush Stewart, Jr. Lucy Alice & Rush lived in Houston & Dallas before settling in Huntsville in 1958, when they built their Austin limestone home on Possum Walk Road. The Stewarts built the Echo Villa Motel on Interstate 45 and the Chicken Shack. They traveled in their motor home to 49 States and most of Canada. Lucy Alice was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, and was active in the United Methodist Women, holding leadership roles. She loved Gospel Music. She was a former member of the Huntsville Garden Club. She loved to play bridge and canasta. Lucy Alice taught ceramics and woodcrafts. She was a member of the Huntsville High School Ex-Students Association. Lucy Alice was an avid genealogist. She was a charter member of the Walker County Genealogical Society. She was Co-Chairman of the Walker County History Book, published in 1986, and contributed numerous articles. She walked and surveyed the cemeteries of Walker County, and a book was published in 1992. Lucy Alice was a walking encyclopedia of early Walker County and its residents. She was a member of the following patriotic organizations: Mary Martin Elmore Scott - Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Regent 1976-1980; President Houston Chapter - Daughters of the Republic of Texas, serving as President 1989-1991; Captain John Utie - Daughters of the American Colonists; and the Robert Lawrence - Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, as a charter member. She was a former member of the Walker County Historical Commission. Lucy Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers, Harry Joe Bruce and Reeves Murphee Bruce, who were both killed in World War II, Dick Bruce; and, her husband, J. Rush Stewart, Sr., who died in 1982. Lucy Alice is survived by her son, James Rush Stewart, Jr., and his wife, Judith Ann, of Houston; 3 grand daughters: Sharyn Ann Robinson and husband Dan; Sasan Elise Cook and husband Alton; Pamela Lynn Schmidt and husband James; great grandchildren Elizabeth Robinson, Emily Robinson, Christian Schmidt and Mackenzie Schmidt her sister, Jessie Powell and husband, Max, of Huntsville; three nephews Joe Max Powell, of Houston; Gary L. Powell, of Austin; and, Dave Bruce and wife, Mary, of California; and her special friend and chauffeur, Harlan Jones. Lucy Alice will be missed by her many, many friends. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Huntsville Tuesday, January 31 at 11 AM with the Rev. Ellen Willett and Rev. Bruce Hay officiating.Interment will follow in Adickes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Lucy Alice will lie in state Monday, January 30 from 8 AM until 7 PM at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 Normal Park, Huntsville, Texas.
