Lonnie E. Vickery

Lonnie Elwood “Eddie” Vickery was born on April 30, 1929, in Red Level, Alabama, to Lonnie Columbus and Ida Lindsay Vickery. He peacefully departed this life on November 11, 2024, at the age of 95 in Huntsville, Texas. Eddie is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Betty Vickery, and their son, David Lee Vickery. He is survived by his daughter, Ramona Christopher, and her husband, Jay, as well as his cherished granddaughter, Anna Pierce, all residing in Coldspring, Texas. Additionally, he leaves behind his brother, Glen Douglas Vickery, of Porter, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews across Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Massachusetts, whom he held dear. Eddie's upbringing in Alabama equipped him with a variety of skills, some of which he embraced to form his career. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Navy and was deployed to Korea, where he met his future brother-in-law, who during a Christmas leave, introduced him to his future wife, Betty. The couple married in 1951 after Eddie’s honorable discharge from the Navy. He then began his career at the Texaco Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. Shortly after marrying, Eddie received a draft notice. Being told that the government makes no mistakes, he opted to enlist in the Army. However, after completing boot camp, the government acknowledged their error and discharged him. He returned to Port Arthur, resuming his job and life with Betty. But another draft notice soon followed, and once again, he was told the government does not make mistakes. This time, Eddie enlisted in the Air Force, where he completed boot camp and trained in airplane mechanics. He was honorably discharged and, fortunately, was never drafted again. Eddie built a fulfilling life in Port Arthur, dedicating 34 years to Texaco as a carpenter. He also pursued side projects, constructing and remodeling homes. His passion for woodworking made him a skilled and accomplished finish carpenter. He actively participated in his union and engaged in local and federal politics, serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1968. In 1961, Eddie and Betty moved to Nederland, Texas, where they raised their children until 1984. Upon retiring from Texaco, they returned to Betty’s hometown of Coldspring, Texas. Eddie enjoyed small-town politics and formed many strong friendships within the community. He was a devoted member of Pine Valley Baptist Church. Eddie was known for his sense of humor, and love for good company. He loved keeping in touch with his friends and family. He relished good food, especially during potluck gatherings, and he loved to sing. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family, yet his full and eventful life created lasting memories for all. The family extends special gratitude to Keith and Sheryle Ellisor for their compassionate care during Eddie's final four challenging years.
