Larry Martin

LARRY ALVIN MARTIN was born on August 20, 1956 in Huntsville, Texas to Lloyd C. Martin and Marilyn Sue Hatch Martin. He died September 16, 2008 in the George Community of Madison County, Texas at age 52. He and his wife, Charlotte were residents of Mission where he had been employed as a member of the Aircraft Section of the Texas Department of Public Safety stationed in McAllen, Texas. While growing up Larry attended first grade in Madisonville, second and third grades in Austin and in 1966 his parents moved to Huntsville where he attended school graduating in 1974 from Huntsville High School. He attended Sam Houston State University and obtained a Bachelors degree in Police Science in 1977. Larry worked as a dispatcher for the Police Department of Sam Houston State University while attending college. He was later employed as a member of the Sam Houston Police Department. His service with the Sam Houston State University inspired him to make his career as a police officer. Following his graduation he applied and was accepted with the Department of Public Safety. While attending college he and Charlotte Barrett dated and were subsequently married. Charlotte also graduated from Huntsville High School and from Sam Houston State University. Larry and Charlotte were married 31 years on September 2nd, 2008. While serving with the Department of Public Safety, Larry was a State Trooper stationed in Navasota, Conroe, Huntsville, and Austin leading his area in DWI arrests. While in Austin, Larry was promoted to the Narcotics Section of TDPS and transferred to Houston, where he was assigned to a Federal/State Drug Task Force. This is where he discovered his love of flying. He worked as a spotter for the Aircraft Section during his service in the Narcotics section. His goal was to become a member of the Aircraft Section. In that pursuit he started taking flying lessons and obtained several ratings to make himself attractive to the Aircraft Section. In the year 2000 he was promoted to the Aircraft Section and stationed in McAllen. Larry excelled in flying and was trained in helicopters and single engine airplanes. He became an instructor because he loved the challenge and teaching and showing others how wonderful flying was. He retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety on August 31st, 2008 after a 30 year career in police work. Larry attended First Baptist Church of Huntsville while growing up and became a member. Larry was preceded in death by his brother David Scott Martin in 1992, his mother Marilyn Sue Martin in 2007, and grandparents Alvin Martin, Alice Childress Martin and William L. Hatch. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Mission, his father Lloyd C. Martin of Huntsville, his brother Bruce Allan Martin and wife, Sonya Martin of Frisco, Texas, two nephews, Alvin Lloyd Martin of Hilltop Lakes and David Bailey Martin of Frisco and two nieces, Magan Nichole Hutchins of Latexo, Texas and Alice Ann Martin of Frisco, and his grandmother Mariola Hatch of Dallas. Funeral Services will be held Monday, September 22, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Burial to follow in the George Cemetery of the George Community in Madison County, Texas. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon September 21, 2008 from 4 to 6 PM at the funeral home.
