June Williams Rogers beloved awesome mother, grandmother and aunt, went to be with our Lord at the age of 96 years old, on December 18, 2017 after suffering a hip fracture and ensuing infections. “Mama June” was born December 7, 1921 in Terrell, Texas to Gilbert (Bud) Williams and Lela Frances Simpson Williams. She was the youngest of four girls, including Louise Williams Clarke, Marion Williams Halliburton and Ruby Williams. June’s father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and the family ended up moving to Ennis, Texas in 1928 when June was just seven years old. She went all the way through public schools in Ennis, meeting her future husband Hubert Rogers, Jr in the 1st grade. They eventually graduated from Ennis High School in 1940. In high school June was very popular and was elected to 4 years on the “drill team” and 2 years as a cheerleader, as well as excelling in academics, primarily English and Journalism. Following high school, June worked for 2 years as a bookkeeper at Castellows Drug Store, then for the Ennis Daily News, where she continued to use her journalism talents during the war (WWII), when most of the men were in the service. On September 18, 1947, June Williams married her high school sweetheart Hubert Rogers, Jr. (Rog) who had returned from his stint in the service. In 1949, with their one-year old son, Thomas Stephen, they moved to Huntsville, Texas to open their own Rogers Shoe Store. June and Rog went on to have two more children, Nancy Jeanne Rogers (1951-1971) and Susan Elaine Rogers (Fowler), born in 1956. While Rog operated the shoe store on the square in downtown Huntsville, June was the epitome of the warm, loving home-maker, who stayed home and raised their three children. Over the years, Mama June was very active in the First Christian Church, acting as vice-president of all the ladies’ groups, chairwoman of her circle for several years, chairwoman of the service committee (in charge of funerals and church dinners), Sunday School teacher, and finally one of the first generation of women elders in the church. During this time, Mama June was actively working with the Brownies and Girl Scout Programs, as well as the Garden Club and a 2 yr. period of working at Huntsville National Bank. Over the years, June and Rog loved playing Bridge and Mexican Train dominoes with their many life-long friends from Huntsville, including June’s Ladies Bridge Club (for over 50 years), and two couples bridge clubs. They also loved to travel and spent many years visiting the entire USA, and many other countries, among them China, Russia, Western Europe, UK, the Middle East, Holy Land, North Africa, Mexico and Central and South America. One of Mama June’s passions was cooking, and her family has enjoyed the very best of her loving care around the table (with years of Sunday lunches at their house). Most of all, Mama June was a constant, steady, loving presence and influence in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She will always be revered as a faithful, Godly woman, who was a gracious and generous hostess, and a jewel of an example in her love of family and friends. There are no words to express how much she will be missed. Mama June is preceded in death by her husband of over 68 years, Hubert C. Rogers, Jr (Rog), daughter Nancy Jeanne Rogers, parents Bud and Lela Williams, and all of her sisters and their spouses. June is survived by her son Tom Rogers and wife Janice; daughter Susan Rogers Fowler and husband Gary; and one brother-in-law Allen Rogers of Georgetown, TX. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Amy Rogers Dean and husband Doug, Emily Rogers Mooney and husband Chad, Justin Fowler and wife Crissie, Jordan Fowler and wife Amanda, Joanna Fowler Wiley and husband Justin, and Jessica Fowler Blumm and husband Cristian. Mama June has eight great-grandchildren: Avery Mooney, Carter Mooney, Gabriel Fowler, Lyla Fowler, Tess Wiley, Tori Wiley, Lorelei Dean, and Logan Fowler. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at First Christian Church in Huntsville, followed by a reception in Clark Hall.
