Joyce Ann Sewell

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Joyce Sewell, a best friend and devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Joyce passed away comfortably at home sitting with Gary in their breakfast area looking out over the peaceful lake with the morning sun shining in. Joyce was born as the second daughter to Clyde and Esther Watts on July 13, 1943 in Delbarton, West Virginia. Growing up in a small town with her sister Donetta, she was literally a 'Coal Miner's Daughter'. Her father was well educated and both of her parents were hard working and helped Joyce follow a path of education. She proudly held her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky where she met Gary Sewell. After they were married and early in Gary's Air Force career, they were stationed in Hawaii where Joyce continued her education earning two Master's Degrees from the University of Hawaii. During this time, she was also raising her two young boys and found her love for tennis, which she continued to play well into her 70s. To spend more time raising her two sons, Joyce's early career was dedicated to teaching. She taught calculus, physics and computer programming. After their graduations, she moved to the private sector, eventually working for Raytheon on government contracts for improved radar tracking systems across the US and later advanced tracking systems for military air space. This latter part of her career found her traveling and presenting to military leaders in countries all around the world. She would proudly joke... " little 'ol me from West-by-God-Virginia". In her retirement, Joyce moved to Texas with her Husband Gary to an incredible community on Lake Conroe named Bentwater. Living on the water, she enjoyed the morning sun, sunset boat rides and all of her family gathering for holidays. Bentwater also reignited her love for tennis where she played competitively and helped organize the community league for over 10 years. Joyce was loved and cherished by all who knew her. Joyce is survived by her Husband Gary, oldest son Bryan, along with his wife Ann and their two children Erin and Jack as well as her youngest son Danny, along with his wife Michelle and their children Kyle and Mae. A celebration of life will be announced for mid-July at the Sewell’s home in Bentwater and Joyce’s ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. If anyone wished to send condolences, we ask that no more flowers be sent and to simply reach out to Gary with a phone call, text or a message on social media.
