Joseph Mattingly

Joseph Harold Mattingly March 7th, 1946 - May31st, 2023 Obituary Joe is predeceased by his parents: Harold and Myra Mattingly as well as his brother Terry. He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Sharon, daughters Wendy and Heidy Mattingly, granddaughter Alexandria Mattingly, his Aunt Norma Mattingly, his sisters Glenda Minnick, Cherlyn (and Steve) Sanford, Stacie (and Steve) Deutsch, his brothers-in-law Derek (and Sheila) Matthys, Bryan (and Christina) Matthys, his sisters-in-law Valerie (and Dave) Morel, Suzette (and Gerald) Kohers, also numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Joe was born and raised in Louisville, KY where he was as energetic, rambunctious, and tireless tyke into his teenage years. He had an infectious charisma as well as the "gift of gab." So, throughout his life, he never met a stranger. During his high school years, he caddied at a golf course to fund his VW Bug, dances, and dates. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army, attended Army Ranger Training, and was as then deployed to Viet Nam in 1965 where he served in a Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol. Once home, he worked briefly at GE, then moved into warehouse distribution management. However, his true calling was to be in sales which he started at Crown Chemical until he landed his dream job at Startex Chemical in Cut and Shoot, Texas. (he transferred to work at the Atlanta, GA. Office for 20 years.) His enduring charisma and gift of gab were then put to full advantage! Joe retired in 2018 in Huntsville, TX. He enjoyed reading histories of the American West and the military, also visiting with family and friends. Joe was always highly motivated by his faith in God, his family, as well as his work. An adventurous type, he loved fishing, camping, hiking, sailing, and road trips. Around 2001 he and Sharon took up kayaking then bought an RV campsite on the Coosawattee River in Ellijay, GA., enjoying many Georgia and Florida rivers and lakes. In the year of 1987, for another adventure, Joe and Sharon married in Cozumel, Mexico on a pirate ship (he was always fascinated with pirate stories)! In 2012 for their 25th wedding anniversary, they spent a glorious week in Pensacola, FL. where they renewed their wedding vows on the beautiful beach, surrounded by close friends and both families. He will be sorely missed by all those who loved him here on earth but his energy and light are now among the stars in Heaven. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday August 19, 2023 at 2:00pm at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, TX.
