John Blair Powell

Blair Powell, Sr. of Conroe, Texas was lifted to the Lord on November 21, 2006 at the age of 60. Also known by his Chickasaw name "Walking Hawk", he was born in Bossier City, Louisiana to Vernon and Estelle Powell on July 13, 1946. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Shortly after graduating from High School in La Marque Texas, he served in United States Air Force for 4 years during the Vietnam era. He then moved to Huntsville, Texas, where he earned his Masters Degree in Criminology from Sam Houston State University. Blair had many things in life he loved, such as his family, friends, Indian heritage, nature, poetry and music. Yet another love was helping others, which was evident in his professional life. He, along with his wife Dr. Lendell Braud-Powell, had worked with abused and delinquent kids in residential centers for the past 14 years. Blair and Lendell also founded CALM (Conroe Association of Live Music) in 1988. Over the years, CALM has enriched the lives of hundreds through Spring and Fall Flings where friends gather to share their love of nature, music, and poetry over campfires and good food The semi-annual celebrations are held at their property (Enchanted Forest), where Blair and Lendell were planning to retire in the near future. Blair Sr. is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dr Lendell Braud-Powell of Conroe; two sons, Blair Powell Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Cedar Park, Ellis Powell and his wife, Lauren of Burkeville; two grandchildren Blair Powell III and Robert Chase Powell; sister Barbara Perkins, her husband Tom Perkins and their daughters Krystle and Kimberly of Grove, Oklahoma; numerous relatives, and many friends – especially those of CALM and the Kerrville Folk Festival. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Willis, Texas and will be followed by a celebration of life at the Enchanted Forest, under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
