John Hodges

John Hodges was born September 12, 1915 in Frederick, Oklahoma to Emma B. Blair (1881-1970) and Joseph David Hodges (1870-1954). He died February 24, 2015 at the age of 99 years. John grew up in Graham, Texas and after graduation in 1933, he hitch-hiked to Riverside, California and lived for 2 years with a sister Vada. He moved back to Graham in 1936 and worked at an Ice House making $1.00 a day. In 1936 he worked for Graytex driving a tanker truck. He met Evelyn Savage a school teacher and his future wife in 1939 and married her May 23, 1940. In 1942 they moved to Houston to work for Brown & Root and in 1946 he went to work for Metal Goods Corporation and retired in 1976. He moved to Huntsville in 1988 and played golf with his golfing buddies as often as he could. John is preceded in death by Evelyn his beloved wife of 53 years, a three year old grandson Robert Stanford Wright, a sister Jimmie Young, three brothers Alfred, Vernon and Fred Hodges and two sisters, Effie Hodges and Vada Dengel. 19 years ago he found his lady friend and traveling companion Betty Martin. Some of the places they visited are Alaska, Jamaica, Hawaii, Baja, Canada, Switzerland, Vena, Germany, Italy, Spain to name a few. He loved to travel and was trying to get someone to go with him to Panama. He is survived by his daughter Vivian Wright and her husband Ray, granddaughter Kathy Miller and her husband Jeff, grandson John Ray Wright and his wife Michelle. He had five great-grandchildren, Brittany Wright, Jordan Miller, Jody, Miller, Jesse Miller, and Dacie Wright. The family would like to thank Huntsville Memorial Hospital, their nurses and staff for the excellent care they gave John, but we want to give a special thanks to Dr. Lawrence Wells his friend and caring doctor. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to Noon on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas.
