Gerald J. Lowery

Gerald J. Lowery was born on March 1, 1932 in Hunnington, Tx and passed away on December 18, 2011 at the age of 79. He lived in Huntsville, Tx for over 30 years & loved the community. Gerald carried himself with a calm & loving disposition throughout his life. He was born in Hunnington,Tx & grew up in Lufkin,Tx. He loved to share many wonderful stories about his mother, father, sisters & brothers and the history of his heritage. He was always proud of his family & their accomplishments. Gerald's true loyalty, inner strength and loving nature will always be remembered by all that knew him. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy before retiring after 22 years of service. He was very proud to have served for his country during the Vietnam War & for the United States of America. He had a photographic memory of events of the times he had in the Navy & his life. He traveled to many places from Maine to Japan. He was so eloquent in telling stories with such detail such as growing up with his brothers that he admired & sisters he adored. Gerald had a love of music, especially Jazz & big band, with his favorite being Erroll Garner the beautiful pianist. He always felt he should have been a musician, as his love of music was one of his greatest pleasures. While living in Oregon he started recycling in the early 1970's before it became well known. He had such a love of nature & trees as he was always involved with the Arbor Day Foundation & the World Wildlife Federation. He worked for the State of Texas with TDCJ and retired after 16 yrs. Of service. One quote he often said was "no matter what's going on it's your attitude & how you handle things that makes a difference." He often spoke of how your attitude can make such a difference in life. His attributes are carried on through his children & grandchildren- honesty, loyalty, thoughtfulness & kindness. He always said "the people you surround yourself around should make you feel comfortable, safe & happy" & always told his children "always remember to be calm, clean courteous & kind." He was such an involved, loving Father & Grandfather always at the grandkids events & coming over to visit daily. He would cut out inspirational stories for the grandkids to read, encouraging the love of reading, learning and anything to nurture their mind & soul. He was always whistling songs & to his favorite music as he as an amazing whistler. Gerald had such a beautiful spirit & good sense of humor no matter what happened. He was always open & kind to anyone he met and just wanted everyone to be at peace & happy. Gerald J. Lowery is preceded in death by his parents Peter Jones Lowery & Alma Tullar Lowery, his four brothers including Joseph Lowery & Charles Lowery, his sisters & brother in laws Lucille Lowery Ivy & G. W. Ivy and Verna Lowery Middleton & Horace Middleton. He is survived by his wife Shizuko Aonuma Lowery, his three daughters & son in laws Jennifer & Andrew Holmes, Susan L. Hunt & Alfredo Cerda and Verna & Shane Lowery. He leaves behind eight grandchildren Brandon E. Holmes & wife Amy Holmes, Austin L. Holmes, Devin Holmes, Keeley R. Sorenson, Savannah B. Holmes, Courtney A. Hunt and Sheridan J. Lowery & Colin L. Lowery. He will be truly missed, loved & remembered forever & always. His memory will be honored through all of his families lives.Services will be Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at 1:30 P.M. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
