Gatsy Nixon Leonard

Gatsy Nixon Leonard, of Evergreen, Texas, passed away on February 25, 2012. She was a New Year’s baby born on January 1, 1919 in West Sandy, Texas to Tom and Eura Nixon. Gatsy graduated from Huntsville High School in 1936. Gatsy had seven brothers and four sisters. On Christmas Eve, 1942, she married Lee Leonard, who was home on leave from World War II. Following the war, they made their home in Deer Park , Tx where they raised their family. They celebrated 37 years together before his death in 1980. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Gatsy was known as Nanny. She loved spending time playing games, reading and making special treats for them. Family get-togethers were always a cause for celebration. Gatsy enjoyed being outdoors working in her garden and flower beds. She was a very talented gardener, seamstress and cook. Reading and collecting recipes were favorite pastimes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, her parents, granddaughter Kerri Meekins, brothers George, Andy, Reuben, Thomas, Robert & Boley Nixon and two sisters, Ida Carter and Curtis Boles. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and sons-in-law, Jimmy & Wanette Meekins and Bob and Monte Knight; grandchildren Tracy Wommack Elgersma (Dave), Corby Meekins (DeAnna), Marty Meekins, Matt Meekins (Shyanne), Clay Meekins (Robin), Kelli Meekins Roberts (Beau), and Jaime Knight Van Delist (Brian); great-grandchildren Connor and Morgan Elgersma, Courtney & Madison Meekins, Cade, Cole and Riley Meekins, Reid and Ivy Meekins, Reagan, Reece & Kaci Roberts; sisters Sue Stone & Robbie Deschaulnears and brother Neal Nixon, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with family on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Burial will follow at Farris Chapel Cemetery in West Sandy. A special thanks to Dr. Luna and the staff at The Bradford, who took such loving care of Nanny during her final few weeks.
