Erma Leona "Ted" Walker

On Thursday, November 19, 2020, Erma “Ted” Walker, loving wife and mother of four children, passed away at the age of 92. Ted was born on January 15, 1928 in Huntsville, Texas to Anderson and Edna (Manley) Yates. Chubby as a child, she loved to wear cuffed overalls and was given the nickname Teddy Bear by her uncle. Teddy Bear was later shortened to Ted as we all knew her. As a teenager, during a summer revival, she made the best decision of her life and was baptized in a stock tank near her home on Spring Circle Loop, North of Huntsville. Ted attended Sam Houston State Teachers College where she met the love of her life and best friend, Joseph Doyle Walker. Ted and Doyle married in 1947 and raised four boys, Joe, Sam, Dan, and Andy. After raising their four boys, she returned to Sam Houston State University to complete a twenty year career in the Physical Plant department. Ted had a passion for people, family, and Christ. She also loved to cook, and she combined her favorite things to master the ability of bringing people together to fellowship and become family. Anyone and everyone was welcome in Ted’s kitchen and guaranteed to leave with a full stomach, a full heart, and from that day forward considered a member of the Walker family. She was a proud and faithful servant of the Lord and a member of Cook Springs Baptist Church until her passing. She was once quoted as saying “We didn’t send our children to church, we carried them, and it’s the only life there is.” Ted was preceded in death by her father and mother, Anderson and Edna, Doyle, her husband of 65 years, and three sons, Mark Delane and Twin boys. She is survived by her four sons, Joe Walker and wife Mary Ann, Sam Walker and wife Veronica, Dan Walker and wife Kay, and Andy Walker and wife Caroline; 9 grandchildren, Allen Walker, Dewayne Walker and wife Mandy, Kristie Herring and husband Jabe, Samuel Walker and wife Charity, Layne Walker and wife Emilie, Kayce Hedrick and husband Will, Rachel Willey and husband Marshall, Lance Walker and wife Lydia, Kyla Walker; 9 great-grandchildren, Makayla and Conner Walker, Bristol and Weston Walker, Hardi Herring, Stella and Marshall Willey, Rhett Hedrick, and Cru Walker. The family would like to thank Linda Dickey, Glenda Brent, Della and Lupita and all of the wonderful staff at Assisted Living of Montgomery County for their love and care. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at 10:00am at Farris Cemetery in Walker County, Texas with Rev. Robert Nichols and Rev. James Ray Necker officiating. Family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 4pm-7pm at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, Huntsville, Texas.
