David Calvin Hoot

David Calvin Hoot Sr. went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2015 at the age of 89. He was born May 12, 1926 in Willow Springs, Texas. He was one of thirteen children born to Aaron Burr and Annie Mae Hoot. At 18 years old, he left his home and family for Germany to serve in WWII, where he joined the 778 Tank Battalion, as a Medium Tank Crewman. He served from 1944 to 1946, and said many times, he would do it all over again to “help those people”. To help, to give, and to be kind were priorities to him. He never met a stranger, and was truly loved by everyone. His love for God, his family, and life were a constant reminder of his pure heart. He always wore a smile, even in his last days. After serving in the war, he came back to Texas, making his home in Houston, where he held several jobs before settling in at Cameron Iron Works for 33 years. He loved his job there, and made many lifelong friends. He married the love of his life, Rachel Crabb on July 5, 1952 and had 3 children, David Jr., Walter, and Debbie, whom he devoted his life to. He was good at many things, but being a dad was his calling. He loved his own children unconditionally, but also loved and cared for many other children that God placed in his life. After retiring from Cameron, he “came home” to San Jacinto County, where he and “mom” made their home in Oakhurst. He was never one to sit around, so he then went to work for TDCJ at The Walls Unit under his good friend, Jack Pursley. He worked Five Picket for most of his years there. Even though he worked full time, he still found time to be at every baseball game, birthday party, and life event of his grandchildren. Being a Pappaw was by far, his greatest joy. He is survived by his son, David Hoot Jr., of Houston, and his daughter, Debbie Toney and husband Bill of Huntsville, and his greatest blessings, grandchildren, Kimberly Crall, Amber Yates and Jared, Rachel Langley and Frank, Rhett Langley and Brittany, Holly Hoot, David Toney and Jennifer, James Toney, Buck Toney and Bambi, and Zachary Toney. He was even more blessed with 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings, Florence Cannalito, Robert Hoot, Robbie Meadors, and Myrtie (Sis) Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rachel Crabb Hoot, a son Walter Lynn Hoot, brothers Douglas Hoot, Cecil Hoot, James Hoot and Leonard Hoot. Sisters Sudie Fry, Addie B Hopkins, Molly Wallace, and Hattie Botard. We would like to thank dad’s caregiver, Teresa Perkins, her husband Ron, and friend Betty Sanders for going above and beyond the call of duty in caring for dad. You were the reason we were able to keep him at home with us, and enjoy him until the end. You were dad’s gift from God, and our blessing. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Visitation will be Sunday, June 28, 2015 from 3:00-5:00pm with a celebration of his life on Monday, June 29, 2015, at 10:00am, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville Texas. Burial will be at Center Hill Cemetery in Oakhurst. The family would like to invite everyone to join them for lunch immediately following the service.
