Carl Mathews

Carl A. Mathews Carl A. Mathews was born in Walker County Texas October 21, 1913 and left this earth to be with his Savior, Jesus the Christ, in Eternity December 4, 2005. Mr. Mathews was a member of one of Walker County’s pioneer families and excepting but a few years was a life long resident. He was successful providing for his family as a building contractor and businessman. His love of nature, particularly the mountains of Colorado, provided his walk with God its finest expression. Mr. Mathews was preceded in death by his parents, Commie Manley Mathews and Mollie Jordy Mathews; one brother John Henry Mathews of Walker County, Texas; three sisters Robbie Seiden, Ruby Fontana and Dorothy Stevenson all of Houston, Texas; and cousin and best friend , Ike Glover of Galena Park, Texas. Mr. Mathews is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Bernice Langly Mathews, daughter Larue Smith and husband Buddy, son Don C. Mathews and wife Regina all of Huntsville; five grandchildren Shawn Smith of Houston, April Smith, Don Mathews II, John Mathews, and Aaron Mathews all of Huntsville; one great-grandson, nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives and friends. Services will be held Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. David Valentine officiating. Interment will follow in the Mayes addition of Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Mr. Mathews’ four grandsons, nephew Frank Fontana and cousin Glen Lowery both of Houston, Texas. Serving as honorary pallbearers are J. A. Chandler, Althen Neiderhofer, Jim Scarborough, Dr. T. C. Cole, Jr., Dr. Bill Coker, Jerry Sandel, Joe Sandel, and Dr. J. C. Stallings. Also in spirit must be included those gentlemen of the Llano hunting club and the American Bank coffee drinkers whose friendship and company Mr. Mathews enjoyed for so many years. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon. A special thanks must be tendered to Dr. T. C. Cole, Jr. for the caring and self denying manner in which he practices medicine. One beneficiary of these virtues, was Carl Mathews.
