Alice Sharon Price Powell On the morning of October 18, 2015, Sharon passed away after a prolonged struggle with cancer and Parkinson's disease. She was lovingly attended by Will and Ligia Brasecu of Comfort Care Home in San Antonio, Texas. Sharon was born on November 10, 1942 in Cleveland, Texas. She was the only daughter of Lottie Jones Price and James Dickinson Price. Sharon grew up in Coldspring, Texas. While in high school, Sharon was Majorette and Drum Major of the band, graduating as Valedictorian in 1960. After graduation, Sharon attended Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, earning a Bachelors’ degree in Elementary Education in three years. Her first teaching job took her to Dickenson, Texas where she taught third grade. On June 12th, 1965, Alice Sharon married Petty Officer John C Powell, USN, of Fort Worth, Texas. The young couple moved to Charleston, South Carolina. Sharon also taught in North Stonington, Connecticut. After her husband’s honorable discharge from the US Navy, Sharon taught at South Knoll Elementary School in College Station, Texas. In 1972, Sharon and Johnny moved to San Antonio, Texas, where they would live for the next forty years. While in San Antonio, Sharon taught third grade at Wilshire Elementary School until 1978, at which time she was offered the opportunity to open the new Woodstone Elementary School, where she taught second grade until her retirement in 2002. She dedicated thirty nine years to public education and was known as a loving and master educator. Sharon loved to travel, and her journeys took her to numerous locations in the Continental United States, and abroad. Sharon was an avid pianist and reader, who was known to stay up until the late hours finishing a riveting novel. Sharon was known for her sweet-tooth and sweet smile. Sharon was preceded in death by parents Lottie and James Price and loving husband John C Powell. Sharon is survived by son James Powell and wife Janet, grandson Derek Powell, brother-in-law Dr. James Powell and wife Carolyn, sister-in-law Jeanette Bland and husband Craig, “surrogate sister” Karen Lilley, cousin and “surrogate brother” Jimmy Jones and wife Cathy, cousin and “surrogate brother” Philip Johnson Jr. and wife Sandra, numerous other family members, close friends and colleagues. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM on Friday, October 23, 2015 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. The memorial service for Sharon will be Saturday, October 24, at First Baptist Church, Coldspring, Texas at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Old Waverly cemetery.
