Phyllis Pinegar

Phyllis Scott Pinegar was born in Huntsville at the old wood hospital, the oldest child, to James and Rosella Scott on October 3, 1944. Phyllis and her younger brother Jimmy were reared in Huntsville. She graduated from High School with the class of 1962. She attended Kilgore Community College before graduating from Sam Houston University in 1968. After college she worked in Houston before being hired as a legal secretary at Walker County Title. She spent many happy years there and made lifelong friends. She married Walt Pinegar in December of 1969 and followed him out of state, until he completed his military service. They moved back to Huntsville and spent 54 years in wedded bliss. She went to work at the Texas Department of Corrections in the Executive Director's office as an Administrative Assistant and Retired as a Legal Administrator after 28 years with the Department, again making lifelong friends. Phyllis was an excellent cook and was known far and wide for her moist pound cakes. She lovingly labeled them as "Phyllis Pinegar's Pound Cakes" because they were so sought after at charitable events by those who had ever bought one before. Phyllis would make upwards of 30 over the Christmas season and distribute them to some of her many friends. Phyllis was a lifelong Baptist and attended North Side Baptist church. She was also a member of a group of women known as "The Magnolias" who would gather several times a year to celebrate the different members' birthdays and other special occasions. Sometimes husbands were invited, but mostly not. She was an avid reader having during her lifetime worn out 3 Kindle tablets and keeping Amazon Books in business. She was also a member of the Huntsville Study Club and Investment Club among others. Phyllis and Walt were known as the perfect hosts by family and their many friends as they provided a beautiful gathering place for years on their large back porch overlooking Spring Lake. Many a good time was had for all there. Phyllis enjoyed the natural beauty of Spring Lake and lovingly made her peaceful transition watching her Houston Astros and enjoying the mornings and sunsets each day over Spring Lake. Phyllis was afflicted with Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC) which affects the lungs, making it hard to breathe and causes a lack of appetite and strength. The combination of MAC and age had a debilitating effect on her health. After spending a week in the hospital, she wanted to come home and was attended by family, friends, and Hospice until she passed away on October 6, 2023. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 54 years, Walt Pinegar and her nephew James Michael Scott and his wife Mari and their children Danika and Matthew. Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother Rosella, father James, and brother Jimmy. The family will receive family and friends on October 17, 2023, in the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with visitation at 9:30 AM and the Celebration of Life Memorial Service being led by Reverend Reagan Cooksey starting at 10:00 AM.
