Louis James Stephens

Louis James (L.J.) Stephens was born in Walker County Texas on January 20, 1930 to Louis Stephens and Laureise Steed Stephens. He passed away January 23, 2021 at his home in Walker County Texas at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Betty Jo (Woods) Stephens, his son William Louis Stephens and wife Sherri, his daughter Jeanette Riley and husband Kevin. Five Grandchildren, Sean Oltman and wife Megan, Ryan Stephens and wife Alaina, Hollie Robles and husband Roland, Staci Bartley and husband Chris, Haley Rothrock and husband Patrick. He is also survived by five Great-Grandchildren Rhett Louis Stephens, Kyler Rene Robles, Lake Elizabeth Oltman, Roland Robles III and Lyla Marie Stephens. L.J. was a lifelong resident of Huntsville and Walker County. He was a Huntsville High School Yell Leader and graduated with honors. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Korean Conflict as a medic, achieving the rank of Sargent. After Korea, he returned to Huntsville where he worked for many years with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1985. He served his community in a number of capacities, most noticeably of which was as a founding member and Deacon of Second Baptist Church. He served on the Pine Prairie Water Board of Directors and President of the Falba Cemetery Association. L.J. and Betty loved to travel in their fifth-wheel trailer and made several trips to Canada and Alaska. He had many fond memories of fishing and camping along the North Fork River in Arkansas. He enjoyed playing 42 and having lunch with his friends. He especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Always quick with a joke or story, he loved spending time with people. Always a diplomat, he had a calming presence acting as the peacemaker in any situation, but also had a way of telling someone to go to some unforgiving place and make them think they would enjoy the trip. L.J. was a huge part of our lives and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him, but through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ we take comfort in knowing that we will meet again.
