Herbert Morton South August 23, 1924 – May 11, 2015 On May 11, 2015 Herbert M. South was lifted up to the heavens and released from all the pain and suffering he has endured in this past year. Herbert was born on August 23, 1924 in Bradley, Arkansas to Ed and Laura South. Herbert is predeceased by his parents Laura and Ed; Herbert’s brothers Robert, James, Wiley, Arden and sister Louise; his first wife Nancy and second wife Clara Ruth. Herbert and his family moved to Longview, Texas from Bradley, Arkansas in 1930. He graduated from Spring Hill High School in 1942. Soon after that, Herbert joined the United States Navy where he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer Commissary. Herbert was involved in numerous conflicts around the world and spent a majority of his time on the USS Wren. After 4 years of active duty, Herbert then joined the Navy Reserves. He was an active member in the Reserves for 15 years. Herbert loved the Navy, and throughout the years attended as many reunions as he possibly could. Herbert made his home in Houston, Texas where he worked as a painter for Teko Painting Contractors. He also taught painting apprentice courses at Houston Community College and San Jacinto College. Shortly after arriving in Houston, Herbert met Laura (“Nancy”) Medeiros; they were married in 1950 and raised two daughters and a son. After Nancy’s passing, Herbert rekindled a friendship with Clara Ruth Yearout, who was also widowed at the time. The two of them were happily married in August 1993 and enjoyed many wonderful years together -- enjoying traveling and family outings until Clara Ruth’s passing in 2010. Family, his church and the Navy meant the most to Herbert. Between the “South/Medeiros” clan and the “Yearout/Leftwich” clan, there are too many nieces/nephews, grandchildren/great grandchildren -- along with step-nieces/nephews and step-grandchildren/great grandchildren to name separately. However, Herbert truly loved them all! Herbert leaves behind his daughter Janice South and her partner David Allen; Gail West and her husband Gene; son Philip Medeiros and his wife Sandra; step-daughter Cynthia Leftwich and her husband Jim; and step-son Ron Yearout and his wife Linda. A Viewing for Herbert will be from 4:00 PM till 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. On Friday, May 15, 2015 a memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of New Waverly at 10:00 AM. Please note that a light lunch will be served in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Herbert will be buried at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Longview, Texas at 3:30 PM following the memorial service in New Waverly.
