Barbara Jean Crout

Barbara Jean Montague Crout was born on July 11, 1930, to James Robert and Ruby (Williams) Montague in Hattiesburg, MS. She grew up in the country nearby, a true southern girl. The grand-daughter of a Methodist minister, she always had a strong faith and was active in UMW and sang in the choir. Her father died when she was six years old, then her mother went to college to become a school teacher to raise Barbara and her younger brother Robert (Sonny). The closeness of their small little family, supported by relatives on both sides, instilled a strong sense of family in Barbara that was her passion. Barbara met Robert Crout through family connections - her aunt married his uncle. They married in March, 1949 when Robert returned from serving the Navy. They headed off to Tulsa, Oklahoma so he could get an education in geophysics. The first trip away from home set them on an adventure living in many different places, from Anaheim, Roswell, Chickasha, Ponca City, and Houston, ready to move on a moment’s notice. She was a great story teller, relaying many humorous tales of her and Bob’s escapades with fellow “doodle buggers.” Because of their relocations, all four children were born in different states. Barbara loved being a homemaker and entertaining, but agreed to begin working to ensure their children received a college education. She was a land analyst for Conoco in Ponca City and an executive secretary for Conoco in Houston. She served as president of the Houston chapter of Desk and Derrick, an organization of oil company support staff whose motto is “greater knowledge, greater service.” In 1988, Barbara and Bob retired and built their lovely lake home in Huntsville, TX. She continued activities at the church, was a member of the ladies golf association, active in Reach to Recovery, and played bridge. She and Bob travelled extensively, from golfing vacations to cruises and tours in Spain. Barbara is survived by her husband, Robert Crout, son Michael Crout and wife Annette, daughter Mary Schooley and husband Doug, daughter Laura Grimes and husband Glenn; ten grandchildren and eight great-children. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and brother, and daughter Jacqueline Crout Reynolds. Family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 26th, 1pm – 2pm, with service at 2pm at First United Methodist Church, Huntsville, TX.
