Ross Pooley

November 20, 1936 - January 10, 2015

Ross Dunkerley Pooley, 78 passed away peacefully at home on January 10, 2015 after a brief yet valiant fight with cancer. Ross was born on November 20, 1936 in Kingsville, Texas. He spent most of his childhood and adult life in the Houston area, and was a proud graduate of San Jacinto High School, Houston. From the time he was old enough to swing a club, he had a great love for the sport of golf. He attended North Texas State University in Denton on a Golf Scholarship. It was something he enjoyed and excelled in. Upon retirement he lived in Elkins Lake, Huntsville and continued to enjoy the game a few times each week until the last several months of his life.
His early career revolved around computers. In 1959 he took charge of Southern Pacific computer department when it was created. Several years later he was in charge of the team that implemented the automated credit card system at Texaco, followed by creating his own business, processing for oil and gas companies. Upon selling it he ventured into real estate development.
Ross was single at the time of his death and is survived by three children who loved him greatly and were beside him until the end: Son Reggie Pooley and wife Mimi, daughter Dee Everett and husband Steve, and daughter Dawn Habbena. He was especially proud of his family. His grandchildren include: Austin Pooley & wife Lindsey, Graham Pooley, Drake Pooley, Abby Gray & husband Reid, Megan McFarland & fiancée Cole Tatsch and (chosen) grandson Josh Wilson and wife Allison.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Howard Pooley, Faye Dunkerley and stepdad Dr. Allen Dunkerley. He is survived by his stepmother Doris Pooley, step brother Steve Kroll and wife Judy, and half-sister Jamie Teunnisen.
Ross enjoyed life, especially in the outdoors and water, fishing, hunting, scuba diving or tubing down the Guadalupe. He loved to read and spent many hours at Huntsville Public Library. His life will be celebrated in the chapel of Sam Houston Funeral Home, 1700 Normal Park, Huntsville, TX 77340 at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015, with a reception to follow at the same location.
