Elfriede Guthrie Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Elfriede Guthrie, age 89, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2022. The daughter of Theodor and Anna Basler, she was born in Offenberg, Germany on January 21, 1933. She was the oldest of her siblings, Helga, Theo, Bruno, and Anita. She is survived by her daughter Mary Lou Berndt and her husband Gary; her granddaughter Nicki Baker and her husband Rory; her great-granddaughter Ava Baker; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Ronald Guthrie, her grandson Andrew Berndt, siblings Helga and Theo. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and home-maker. Elfriede met her husband Ronald when he was stationed in Germany with the US Army. She came to the United States in 1956 and lived in many different states, as well as in Europe, throughout her husband's long military career. In 1970, Elfriede and Ronald retired to Huntsville, Texas; Elfriede would proudly call Huntsville her home for the rest of her life. Elfriede had an adventurous heart, and spent her last four decades traveling America and Canada. She drove to Michigan to visit family, and back to Texas alone many times, the last time at 87 years young. Dancing was her passion. She usually could be found two stepping six nights a week with her companion Olin Holt. Elfriede truly cared about people, as her many friends know. She loved hearing people's stories, and engaged with everyone she met. Her spirit of optimism, caring, and kindness leave a blessed memory in the hearts of family, neighbors, and friends. Elfriede was much loved, and will truly be missed by family and friends. In a last conversation with her granddaughter, she smiled and said "I have lived the American Dream."
